Ceramic tile loss is something that most owners are concerned about when decorating. Although the unit price of tiles is not high, once the loss is large, if the single tile times ten times a hundred, it will be a loss of thousands of dollars! We all know that it is normal for ceramic tiles to have loss, so what is the cause of loss? Within what range is reasonable loss? How to reduce ceramic tile loss? Zhongtaojun will answer everything for you~
The stuff is coming! A wave of tips for reducing loss is coming to you!
01
What is loss
Before and during the laying of ceramic tiles, the integrity of the brick body is damaged, and the area of the brick body becomes smaller or cracked, which is called loss.
02
Reasons for loss
The causes of loss are divided into: external factors and internal factors
External factors are usually human-induced losses
★Unskilled operation by workers and errors during cutting.
★Need to cater to the house area, and the tiles need to be cut to fit the ideal paving area, resulting in losses. (The above are the two most common causes of loss)
★Accidental loss during transportation.
Intrinsic factors are usually losses caused by product quality
★Problems such as product color difference, flatness, shape, etc. cause loss that cannot be used.
03
Reasonable loss range
There is no unified standard for a reasonable loss range, and there is no accurate data to limit it. However, ceramic tile loss is inevitable and can only be minimized, but cannot be completely eliminated. The severity of loss of different bricks is different, but based on past experience, it can be concluded that under normal circumstances the overall loss of ceramic tiles is generally between 5-10%, as a rough reference range.
04
How to calculate loss
There are three most common calculation methods on the market
Rough calculation method
Room floor area ÷ area of each floor tile × (1 10%) = number of tiles used
(10% in the formula refers to the increased loss rate, which can be adjusted according to the tiles).
Accurate calculation method
(room length÷brick length)×(room width÷brick width)=number of bricks
For example: for a room 5 m long and 4 m wide, the calculation method of using 400mm×400mm floor tiles is 5m÷0.4m=12.5 tiles (take 13 tiles) 4m÷0.4m=10 tiles 13×10 tiles=the total number of bricks used is 130 tiles .
After calculating, multiply it by the loss rate to calculate
Common methods
Number of floor tiles = area of the room where wall and floor tiles are laid/[(length of block material width of ash joint) × (width of block material width of ash joint)] × (1 loss rate)
For example: choose retro floor tiles with specifications of 0.5×0.5M, seam width of 0.002M, loss rate of 1%, and the number of tiles required for 100 square meters is: 100 square meters usage = 100/[(0.5 0.002)×(0.5× 0.002) × (1 0.01) is approximately equal to 401 pieces.

How to reduce tile loss
For the second major point, let’s talk about how to reduce the loss of ceramic tiles
Countermeasures to solve external factors
1. Find a good decorator
There are two ways to find a tiling master: a decoration company or a master recommended by an acquaintance. The masters of the decoration company will have relatively real data that can be used as a reference to measure technology and proficiency, and the after-sales service is relatively guaranteed.
The prices of masters recommended by acquaintances are usually more affordable, but you need to keep your eyes peeled, or you can go to the previous store where he shopped for reference to check whether the technology is good.
During the paving process, supervise appropriately to see if there is any waste.
2. Choose the right size
When choosing the size of normal bricks, you first need to look at the size of the paving area. If it is a small area, it is recommended to choose tiles below 600×600㎜. For larger areas, you can choose tiles above 800×800㎜. Large-area ceramic tiles have a grand effect, but have a higher loss rate. Remember, you can lay large bricks or small bricks on a large area, but never lay large bricks on a small area. The effect will not be good and the loss rate will be high.
3. Choose the appropriate paving plan
Choose a paving plan based on the house type and area. If you want the paving to be more complex, be sure to discuss with professionals to choose the most appropriate plan.
Like special-shaped bricks, bricks that require more cutting have a higher wear rate than normal bricks. It should be noted that not all house types are suitable for paving, so when choosing a plan, listen to the advice of professionals and do not blindly follow your own path.
4. Calculate the purchase quantity
Before purchasing ceramic tiles, it is essential to make a calculated purchase. There are two methods for calculating losses: formula calculation and drawing a brick diagram. The formula is mentioned above, so let’s talk about how to draw a brick diagram.
The best way to accurately determine the amount of ceramic tiles is to draw a tile layout diagram. Determine the tile arrangement diagram based on the size of the tiles and the size of the paving space, and count the number of tiles on the tile arrangement diagram. The brick diagram can also more accurately reflect the size of normal wear and tear. This allows owners to buy all the bricks they need at one time, no more, no less, and avoid the worry of running around.
Countermeasures to solve internal factors
When purchasing ceramic tiles, it is best to choose products with better quality and well-known brands. Do not be greedy for cheap and choose products of substandard quality. When purchasing, it is best to agree on the replacement conditions with the merchant, such as whether it can be repaired, returned, replaced, claims conditions and responsibilities, etc.

A complete list of ceramic tile laying methods
1. Traditional paving method
This is the most common method. It is simple, elegant and regular, and is suitable for every family.
2. Diamond paving method
Turn the square direction into a diamond shape, breaking the tradition and not being single.
3. I-shaped paving method
The I-shaped shape mostly appears on wood grain tiles, but ceramic tile paving also looks good.
4. Herringbone paving method
This kind of paving looks like a two-way arrow, which is an interesting paving.
5. Decoration method
Embellishing paving on traditional square bricks serves as the finishing touch.
6. Wave line laying method
The wave line laying method is suitable for defining a range and separating an area, which is both beautiful and functional.
7. Hopscotch paving method
As the name suggests, hopscotch is a jumping method that will make the whole thing lively.
8. Blue-patterned paving method
The laying method is like the weaving of a bamboo basket, with a textured beauty.
9. Windmill paving method
Wrap the pavement around a point, like small windmills spinning on the ground.
10. Hexagonal paving method
The hexagon is a very popular shape and very personal.
